John Taylor got together
with Nick in 1978 (they had been best friends for years before that) and
formed the nucleus of Duran Duran. His original instrument of choice was
the guitar, but later they got Andy, and he picked up the bass after that.
And he's (in my oh-so-humble opinion) one of the world's best bass players,
ranking right up there with Sting and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
He has such a varied musical style that it's scary, everything from the
plunky meaty baselines in the early days to the plunky meaty baselines
in power station to the punky meaty style of music as a solo artist.
He and Andy Taylor (who
left the band in 1986) got together in 1985 with Tony Thompson from Chic,
and Robert Palmer (another great British artist I might add) to form the
Power Station. Unfortunately the band fell apart not long after forming,
recording and touring so they got Michael DeBarres to fill in as singer
for the remainder of the dates.
John had a successful solo
venture in 1986 with his first solo hit, "I Do What I Do," off the "9-1/2
Weeks" soundtrack in 1986. It reached the top 25 of Billboard's Top 100
on , 1986 There was a gray period in his life in the late 80's to early
'90's when the drugs and drinking lifestyle of rock and roll got the better
of him. We're all happy to hear that he's been clean for a number of years
now. He's found his own peace, and he has a beautiful daughter from a former
marriage. And in early 1999, he married longtime girlfriend, Gela.
John tried getting back
together with Palmer, Thompson, and Andy in 1995 for a ten year reunion
of the Power Station. But he left a while later citing creative differences.
PS has since went on to release an album and tour sans John.. A second
successful side project he worked on was the "Neurotic Outsiders," a combo
of Guns 'n' Roses, Sex Pistols and Duran Duran. John managed to show more
of his Sex Pistols influence on this album (as he did on his first solo
album). They released an album in 1996, and even reunited in 1999 for a
couple of shows, one of which included Spice Girl Melanie C for a guest
spot.
He formed his own record
label, B5 records, and in 1995 John released his first solo album, "Feelings
Are Good And Other Lies." Very well-done and heart felt. (Check out my
review in the CD section of John's Page). John released the followup
to FAGAOL, the Autodidact EP, in 1997 and launched a brief tour in 1998.
He's currently wrapping up work on his second full length solo album.
And just recently he released "Meltdown," a CD of material he originally
recorded in 1992, and played a few dates at the Viper Room in Los Angeles,
in preparations for a tour in Japan where he'll release his second solo
album first.
But music isn't the only
thing driving John these days. He has several movie projects in the
works. He starred in the movie, "Sugartown," which made its debut
at the Sundance film festival in 1998. It was released in Los Angeles
and New York theatres on September 17, 1999. John is also set to
have parts in the upcoming movies, "Four Dogs Playing Poker" and "Flinstones
II: Viva Rock Vegas." Both of them are set for release sometime
in 2000.
John also rejoined Duran Duran after Warren
Cucurullo's departure in 2001. The band is currently working on a new
album.
