The day Simon LeBon walked into the Rum Runner
in pink leopardskin trousers to audition for lead singer of Duran Duran
was the day the group as we know it is born. Duran Duran played
their first major gig with Simon in November of 1980, with their self-titled
debut album following four months later in March of the next year.
Simon had a close brush with death in 1985.
He and several of his sailing buddies took part in the Whitbread worldwide
sailing race, but they didn't make it to the finish line. Simon's
sailboat, dubbed "Drum," turned turtle. Luckily, no one (including
Simon) on board was killed. He married Yasmin Parvaneh a short time
later. Yasmin and Simon become parents to three daughters (in 1989,
1991, & 1994).
Simon's instruments of choice include the tambourine (as
seen in "Notorious"). He can also play guitar quite well. He plays the
guitar intro on the title track on the "Thank You" album, the first song
on a Duran Duran album he ever played on.
